Iconic Property Hits the Market in SA

An historical estate built in 1878 by a prominent South Australian family is on the market for the first time.

The property named ‘Weetunga’, an aboriginal word for ‘Place of Water’, was built by the iconic South Australian White family, who were renowned ornithologists and conservationists in the state.

Samuel Albert White has a dedicated section of the Adelaide Museum recognising his significant contributions in the field.

“The property has never sold in its 135 year history – it’s truly a unique opportunity to buy a piece of South Australia’s history.

“This is one of the state’s most historically significant properties and we bring the home to tender, closing 21 May,” says Patrick O’Flaherty, selling agent at Ray White Henley Beach.

Currently owned by Murray Chesser, the son-in-law of Samuel Albert White, the state heritage listed home is built over two titles on 5,113m² of land and the estate is disposed of two properties.

“The main residence at 14 Weetunga Street boasts beautiful period features, four bedrooms, two bathrooms and parking for five cars. Minor extensions have been made to bring the kitchen under the main roof, and a bathroom was updated in the 1990s in keeping with the original style of the home.

“The main residence also features servants quarters with two bedrooms, a kitchen, bathroom, storeroom and parking for a further three cars,” says Mr O’Flaherty.

A secondary residence at 12 Weetunga Street was built in the mid 1980s on a different title, but is to be sold with the main house.

“This home has three bedrooms, one bathroom and two living areas, with a verandah surrounding the entire home and overlooking the park on Riverway Drive,” Mr O’Flaherty explains.

A conservation report for ‘Weetunga’ is available upon request. Tender for the property closes 21 May 2014.

“Properties such as ‘Weetunga’ are rare. The combination of the history, land size and grand scale makes this estate unrivaled in the area,” Mr O’Flaherty concludes.
