Ever heard that good old saying โwhen it rains, it poursโ? Itโs a phrase often associated with a run of bad luck and the resignation that bad news is often accompanied by even more bad news.
In real estate, thereโs a temptation to slip into this mindset when things arenโt quite going to plan. But itโs also a phrase you can turn on its head in order to welcome the rain as part of the real estate ride.
Well, thatโs a bit of a dampener
In real estate there will inevitably be those moments when things donโt pan out as you believe they should.
You know the ones. Itโs those occasions when we put a deal together, only to have the buyers cool off the next day.
Later that same day, we find out that we have lost what we assumed was a guaranteed listing to a competitor. Then they end up selling the property to a buyer who we were speaking with.
It begs the question: โWhat is going on?โ
Is bad luck following you? Is it your lot in life to come out second best?
Yep, when it rains, it pours. And thereโs a temptation to paint yourself the unwitting, pity-drenched victim in a series of unfortunate events.
Let me rain on your parade
When things donโt go to plan, itโs easy to throw your hands up in the air and resign yourself to a situation that feels beyond your control.
But for just a moment let me rain on your personal pity parade. When we succumb to the assumption itโs โbad luckโ disease, itโs an excuse to apportion blame away from ourselves.
Itโs a way out of taking personal responsibility. Itโs a neat opportunity to surrender accountability and consider the easy option of giving up.
But as the โpuddles of misfortuneโ pool around you, Iโd urge you to consider the followingโฆ
Real estate is never all sunshine and roses
It doesnโt matter how good you are at this career, or how long youโve been plying your trade, real estate is never an industry that is all sunshine and roses.
And thatโs not a bad thing. Those rainy days offer an incredible opportunity to grow and learn.
Instead of succumbing to the โbad luckโ mindset, ask yourself what could you have done differently? Were there gaps in your service, your knowledge or craft that need to be filled?
Take this as a chance to hone your skills, because when you do that, you seize back the power to honestly evaluate yourself and keep growing.
Donโt forget the positive
When we think of the phrase โwhen it rains it poursโ thereโs often an association with the negative.
However, the opposite equally applies. When it rains, it also pours the positive.
Good things continually happen. In fact, the more active you are, the busier you are, the more negative AND positive occurrences appear. One cannot live without the other.
And thatโs the key message.
When we think, โFar out, whatโs next?โ donโt assume just the negative.
Assume and include the positive. Focus on the positive and, as much as we donโt want to hear it, have an attitude of gratitude.
So let it rain, let it pour, and keep moving forward no matter how wet you get.
