Famed romance novelists former mansion for sale

Dame Barbara Cartland’s former London residence, a lavish five-story mansion located in the prestigious Mayfair area, has been freshly listed for an impressive $44.2 million.

Known as the ‘Queen of Romance’ for her prolific literary career, Cartland’s luxurious home boasts a rich history and opulent features.

Originally constructed in 1902 for Sir Cuthbert Quilter, a Liberal politician and stockbroker, the Edwardian-style abode has welcomed numerous notable occupants over the years, according to the Robb Report.

Acquired by Cartland in 1936, the property served as a home for her and her daughter, Countess Raine Spencer, who is renowned as the stepmother of Princess Diana.

Despite this connection, Cartland did not receive an invitation to Princess Diana’s wedding to Prince Charles in 1981.

The mansion also holds significance as the birthplace of Sir Alec Douglas-Home, a brief Prime Minister during the mid-1960s.

Presented as the epitome of London luxury, the mansion encompasses 790sq m of living space designed by celebrated architect Detmar Blow.

The red-brick exterior features neo-classical cornices, exuding a timeless elegance.

Inside, the residence boasts original period elements such as ornate ceilings, stone fireplaces, and a grand wooden staircase.

While preserving its historic charm, the property has been thoughtfully modernised.

Notably, the basement has been transformed into a spa oasis, showcasing an indoor swimming pool, sauna, relaxation area, and even a bar.

The residence is well-equipped for hosting gatherings, with spacious reception areas on the ground and first floors capable of accommodating more than 100 guests.

The mansion offers six bedrooms, including a lavish primary suite spanning the entire second floor.

This luxurious suite features an overhead projector above the bed, an expansive walk-in closet, a private ensuite bathroom, and a personal terrace.

Listing agents Michael Holt and Nicole Hay of Compass describe the property as a prime example of London’s finest living, citing its exceptional features and prime location near Park Lane and Grosvenor Square.
