Elite Agent TVEPMEPM: Technology & Social

Could you be hired to sell a house on LinkedIn (Part Two!)

After our tip of the week last week, a few readers emailed and asked what I meant by “give your LinkedIn profile some love”. Profile completeness is a given, but here are three of my other top tips… hope they work for you.

First,  let me say like every site that you maintain a profile on whether it is realestate.com.au, Domain, Rate My Agent or any site where you have a public profile; the ones that will always appear at the top of the search pile are the ones that are the most complete, ie the profiles have the most fields filled in are always going to be at the top.

Case in point: (and it’s in the current issue of Elite Agent Magazine), we did an exercise at momentum this year where we had to meet someone new, and do a google search on them as it pertained to real estate. I met a guy called Greg Brown and I thought there would be heaps of ‘Greg Browns’ in real estate – it’s a fairly common name right? But the Greg Brown that I met sitting behind me was number one result in Google search on his realestate.com.au agent profile simply because the Greg Brown below him had a profile that wasn’t as complete. So my tips today are not going to be around completeness of profile, we are going to consider that one a given – just do it, OK?

So three quick tips – here we go.

1. The list of real estate agent recommendations I received when I searched pro finder were directly related to how many connections we had in common. So tip number one is when you meet someone – anyone – connect with them on LinkedIn. Doesn’t matter where you meet them or what they do. Grab a business card, (forget all that card-munch app stuff once you have all your contacts connected to you on linked in you can sync them to your phone anyway) so yeah, grab a business card look for their email address and search for them on LinkedIn when you get back to the office.
Drop them a note reminding them how you met, that you enjoyed meeting with them and that you would like to connect or keep in touch. Don’t sell though, there is nothing more annoying than someone who sells immediately on connecting, it has happened to me a couple of times lately on Facebook as well and it’s like eeech. Anyway. Connecting on LinkedIn this way will create a reminder for the person about meeting you and gradually increase your network – which is the goal.

2. Get recommended. If you have connected on LinkedIn with some of the vendors you worked before, politely with ask them for a recommendation. You can do this automatically through linked in by clicking on improve my profile, find the button that says view my profile, drop that down and then go through the steps to ask to be recommended.

3. You can now publish articles etc on LinkedIn so get writing about your experiences in real estate, answer questions, be helpful. These articles can get you noticed like you wouldn’t believe and of course, when people “like” or comment on them, reach out and connect to them. Once again this grows your network!

They are my top three tips for improving your LinkedIn profile, try them out, hope they work for you and have a great week.
