Looking back, moving forward: Joel Davoren

The Managing Director of RE/MAX Australia reflects on the past 12 months and looks towards the next twelve

2020 has been a watershed year. There have been unexpected hurdles, times to check in on what really matters, to reassess our goals and look towards a hopeful future.

In the final issue of our magazine for 2020, we asked some of our industry leaders how they found the past year, and what they’re looking forward to in 2021.

2020 in one word?

Transformational.

Give us some highlights?

I think every business has made changes to how they operate, and most likely for the better.

Professionally, we have had some major leadership changes in the middle of COVID, and we have made a conscious effort to be more present and visible to our network as a result of this and the pandemic.

This will continue moving forward.

What will you leave in 2020?

Our lifestyles are going to be changed for the foreseeable future, maybe until we get a vaccine or perhaps for much longer.

Most people’s regular habits and routines have been seriously disrupted.

A huge percentage of the population has felt out of sync for most of the year, and I think we are starting to see the forging of new habits, routines, and structure.

I’ll be leaving behind old habits and routines, and building new ones to bring a sense of stability for myself, my family, and our business.

What worked for you in 2020?

Fast, not perfect. We really focused on making sure we were quick to get information and strategies to our business owners and members.

That pace often meant we made some mistakes, but predominantly we were able to offer reassurance to our network by helping them feel like they were in good hands.

Our members didn’t want us to be perfect, they wanted us to be efficient, supportive, and present.

I believe we achieved that.

What’s your focus for 2021?

We are in the process of reviewing our strategic plans for the next 12 to 36 months. The focus will be on ‘execution’ next year.
