Jet Xavier: One day or day one?

Just as a caterpillar turns into a butterfly, Jet Xavier says it's possible to reinvent yourself. In this thought-provoking column, Jet questions why many in Western society feel so unfulfilled and what you can do to get the life you always envisioned on track.

“People who cannot invent and reinvent themselves must be content with borrowed postures, second-hand ideas, fitting in instead of standing out.” -Warren Bennis

There is nothing successful about creating a great business or being a great agent while going through your third divorce, disconnected from your kids, with no energy, bad health, and always being exhausted, overwhelmed, stressed and under pressure.

That’s not what real success is.

As one of my clients put it, “I just don’t like who I am anymore.”

The common conversation is, “Jet, I just did my best year ever, my offices are growing, but my life is not where I want it to be. I’m lost and unmotivated. What do I do?”

I recently had a conversation with a multi-million-dollar agent of 15 years who now has a strong referral business.

I curiously asked what, if any, were their challenges considering they had massive leverage in their business, which would allow them more control.

They replied, “I would love to get more time with the family and also to do more things outside of work”.

I said, “What, wait a minute, did I just hear what you said?”

My jaw dropped as the realisation hit me that despite agents building great leveraged careers, many are still caught in what I call the ‘one day I will’ trap.

The ‘one day I will’ trap says that success is about achieving three things – wealth, status, and material possessions.

And that when you get these three things, you will have the time for what’s important in life because you have made it.

This trap is what most of Western society is in and why so many people are not fulfilled.

This trap is what robs us of a pure, holistic, authentic experience of life and engagement.

There are two key things you need to do to get out of the ‘one day I will’ trap and get back your life while still achieving excellent career success.

You need to choose

“When you make a choice, you change the future.” –Deepak Chopra.

You need to decide. Are you happy on the treadmill of just striving for wealth, status, and materialism at the expense of what’s important?

Or do you want to change and experience life at a more complete optimal level? You choose.

Our world around us reflects our world within us and the choices we make, and nothing changes unless something changes.

For things to be different, you need to be different. You need to change.

You need to reinvent yourself

  1. Say goodbye to the old model of you and hello to the new model of you.
  2. Redefine what success means to you.
  3. Let go of past ways of doing things and find new, more effective and efficient ways.
  4. Connect to your true values and what’s important to you.
  5. Focus on what gives you meaning, what you are passionate about, what your purpose is and what truly fulfils you.
  6. Decide not to compromise on the person you need to be or the life you want to have.
  7. See yourself as somebody who is in control and has an abundance mindset.
  8. Embody the courage and conviction to set boundaries in your life that make you live an authentic life.

I love this text from my client the other day who got out of the ‘one day I will’ trap. It sums it all up perfectly.

“I just hit $1.2 million GCI for the year while having a life, working four days a week, having family priority, surfing twice a week, keeping fit and still mentally energised. Thanks for the support.”

Are you ready for change? Are you ready to take that next step? Is it Day one?
