Fran Wernert: You’re in control

Almost two decades in the industry has taught Ray White Wondonga agent Fran Wernert many lessons, including not to let the job control you

On getting into real estate
I never had any intention of having a career in real estate, however an opportunity presented itself and I went with it. I was working in the newspaper industry as an advertising rep and one of my clients owned a real estate agency. He offered me a job at a time when I was looking for a new challenge – and the rest is history!

The happiest moment in my career
There have been so many it is hard to narrow it down. I initially started my career in sales and the joy experienced when you sell someone their dream home is second to none. Property management is a whole new ball game and a tough gig, but when you get it right the feeling is amazing. I think the happiest moment, if I had to choose one, was opening the door to our very own agency.

The most memorable moment
We leased a property which was pure ’70s retro style – amazing decor! The en-suite had red trim on all fittings, red taps and bronze and red trim on the shower. The main bathroom had yellow. I have never seen anything like it and it was immaculate.

Best advice she’s received
I have two: Don’t take it personally and don’t let the job control you – you control the job. I think both are vital if you are to survive in the long term.

Biggest challenge
Changes to legislation, in particular property management, will have a huge influence on the industry. I think it is so important for us to all be professionals and educate our potential landlords so we can maintain a high level of investment in property.

Change for good?
A minimum fee level! There are so many in the industry “dropping” their fees to get the business and then not providing a service. If we have a minimum level then only the professional, knowledgeable and dedicated agents will survive. If we can do that, then we become a profession that is well respected and we are paid a fair price for the job we do.

‘Elite’ agent means
An elite agent is someone who is respected and sought after in their industry. We can all do big numbers and sometimes the actual dollar amount is not an indication of the agent – it can often depend on the area that you work out of. To have more than 90 per cent of your business as referral business is an indication you are doing well!

#WeAreRealEstate is a series of short interviews with 140 agents all over Australia, exploring the industry’s hopes, concerns, future challenges, and what it really means to be an Elite Agent.
