Dexar Group brands come together for annual convention

Technology, a transforming industry and the importance of authentic leadership were on the agenda at Dexar Group’s Annual Convention, held in Byron Bay from Sunday 26 to Tuesday 28 August.

In its third year, the sold-out convention brought Dexar Group’s three real estate brands, Laing+Simmons, Peter Blackshaw Real Estate and Independent Property Group, together for a jam-packed three days of international speakers, team activities and social events.

The theme for the convention was “The Authentic Leader – You” and explored the challenges of maintaining authentic relationships and leadership skills in a rapidly changing industry.

“There is so much focus on technology today that we wanted to make sure we focused the group on the importance of authenticity in all of our relationships. Consumers are asking for trusted advisors in the real estate space and want to deal with people who are authentic,” said Leanne Pilkington, Managing Director of Laing+Simmons.

The theme was supported by a line-up of international speakers. Author and entrepreneur Kirsty Spraggon opened the convention, speaking to the group on the power of showing vulnerability and taking risks to become an authentic leader.

Key note speaker Gihan Perera

Futurist Gihan Perera opened Day Two with a presentation on disruption and innovation in a fast-changing world, showing agents how technology can be used to improve relationships and build authentic connections with people.

The closing speaker, Holly Ransom, examined the changing landscape of consumer trust in brands and how the role of technology, robots and algorithms is changing what is expected from brands and businesses – a topic Simon McGuire, Head of Dexar High Performance, believed was perfect for closing the convention.

“Our industry is and always will be based on deep, connective relationships. Regardless of the fundamental changes around data, technology and consumer expectations, our ability to connect and build trust is key at every level of our business. For our sales agents, it’s the driver to turn real estate into a long term, rewarding career,” Mr McGuire said.

While the days were filled with team-building activities and speakers, the evenings were for networking and socialising. Karaoke, trivia and a hippy themed party encouraged agents to mingle with those from other brands and areas.

“Having the opportunity to bond over shared experiences has been the key to the incredible culture that we have. It’s gratifying to watch that same culture now bonding our three brands together. Every year the relationships get stronger and stronger. It’s really one united business, not three separate brands,” Ms Pilkington said.

“This convention was one of the best we’ve ever run. Many agents commented on how much content they were able to take and apply to their own businesses. The growing bond between our sales groups as they strengthen relationships and share their knowledge and experience was a real highlight,” Mr McGuire said.

The 2019 Dexar convention will be held in Kingscliff, NSW.
