Australia’s Best Beach House Hits the Market

The owners of a Whitsundays mansion, recently dubbed the best beach house in Australia, have put their 75 acre beachfront property on the market.

The property has around 400m of absolute beachfront and hits the market through Mark Beale of Ray White Whitsunday, with price expectations of $10m.

Owners of the property, Ian and Sissy Bishop have lived in the mansion, named ‘Heaven’s Gate’, for seven years and also own the 75 acres that neighbour the property.

“We are absolutely in love with the area and have no intention of moving away. If we sell Heaven’s Gate, we’ll simply build on the land next door!” Mr Bishop said.

Mr and Mrs Bishop moved into Heaven’s Gate seven years ago. The couple are now in their 60s and Mr Bishop’s newest venture involves buying into a gold mine.

“A friend and I are looking into buying a gold mine in Proserpine about an hour away from home,” Mr Bishop explains.

Ian and Sissy Bishop came to Australia 22 years ago from the UK and have lived in Heaven’s Gate since it was built in 2006.

The residence itself spans 1,400sqm of living space, has a cinema, gym, swimming pool, two spas, tennis courts, separate caretaker’s house, walled gardens, parking for a dozen cars, helipad and a hangar for a sea plane.

The couple have fallen in love with the area and the lifestyle that it offers them.

“The tranquility of the property is something we love. There is no public right of way between us and the beach and that offers us complete privacy.

“We adore Heaven’s Gate and we’ll be sad to leave because, even though we’ll only be moving next door, we can never build something so beautiful. It’s a property that simply could not be better,” Mr Bishop said.

An engineer by trade, Mr Bishop has many interests outside of work. He’s a pilot, base jumper, hang glider, sky diver, parachuter, hot-air ballooner and mountain climber.

“I’ve been to the Himalayas six times. I was part of the team that sent the first hot air balloon over Mt Everest, I’ve climbed three quarters of the way up the mountain and sky dived in front of it.

“I’ve survived a plane crash, broken my tibia and fibula base jumping and my femur hang gliding. I have been a parachute instructor for a civilian club and also for the Marines. I’ve explored underwater caves in the Bahamas and I’ve been to Antarctica,” Mr Bishop concludes.
