Domain sees record audience growth after ownership change

Domain has recorded a spike in audience share across its platforms just four weeks after transitioning to a new ownership structure and increasing its marketing investment.

The property platform has entered Australia’s peak selling season with strong momentum, achieving a record-breaking 44.2 million total visits¹ in September across its platforms, including domain.com.au, allhomes.com.au, and commercialrealestate.com.au.

Domain President Jason Pellegrino said the company’s underdog status should concern competitors as more consumers and agents choose its property platforms.

“We are about bringing more eyeballs to listings, whether that is residential or commercial, so agents can have confidence when they use us, they will get results,” Mr Pellegrino said.

The growth comes despite challenging market conditions, with residential listing views growing 12% year-on-year² in a market with comparable listing volumes down.

“When a vendor lists with Domain, they are getting a lot more attention than a year ago,” Mr Pellegrino said.

Domain’s commercial real estate platform has particularly benefited from additional investment, achieving a record unique audience of 1.3 million³, representing a 24.6% increase year-on-year⁴.

This marks the platform’s fastest-growing spring ever, significantly outpacing its nearest competitor, whose numbers declined during the same period.

The impressive growth follows Domain’s recent acquisition by global real estate giant CoStar Group, a move that appears to be quickly reshaping the competitive landscape of Australia’s real estate market.

Mr Pellegrino said the company was taking a strategic approach to growth.

“We have been deliberate in signalling to the market that we are investing heavily in our platforms, improving the user experience and growing the audience,” he said.

September also marked a record for Domain’s residential platforms, which achieved a combined unique audience of 7.4 million across domain.com.au and allhomes.com.au.

This achievement is particularly notable as it represents the first month that Domain no longer received audience attribution from Nine masthead property pages.

The company’s growth strategy appears to be yielding results despite being in the early stages of implementation.

Domain’s focus on enhancing user experience and expanding its audience reach has positioned it as a formidable competitor in Australia’s property marketplace.

Industry analysts suggest that Domain’s aggressive growth strategy, backed by CoStar Group’s resources, could significantly alter the competitive dynamics in Australia’s real estate technology sector.

“We have a long road ahead to radically transform how Australians experience property. However in less than a month, we have set a clear baseline and have proven through our recent independence that we’re not just here to stay, we’re here to deliver on our ambition,” Mr Pellegrino said.
