We Are Real Estate

David Dwyer: Hooked from day one

One Agency’s David Dwyer shares his thoughts on why real estate is a contact sport

On getting into real estate
I responded to an advertisement in the paper. I really had no idea of the day-to-day processes an agent needs to complete, but I was addicted from day one.

The happiest moment in my career
Any time I hand the keys to a new owner, especially a first home buyer.

The most memorable moment
Two come to mind. The first home I ever sold – $279,000. And my highest priced sale – $1,4000,000, which is still a suburb record.

Best advice he’s received
Treat the janitor like the CEO – never judge anyone.

Biggest challenge
The biggest challenge in the future could be sales automation. There will be plenty of digital companies creating ideas to bypass the real estate agent to list and sell property virtually. The best way to combat these developments is to offer a personal service whilst introducing similar digital advancements. Constant contact with our clients is and will be essential.

Change for good?
Professional career recognition. I feel we are on the right track with the pathway to making real estate a professional career. For years it has been too easy to break into this industry with little knowledge of the laws and regulations involved. There are many wonderful people in this industry who approach their careers as professionals. Unfortunately there are also people who do little study, don’t take the time to educate themselves, and are only in it for the quick dollars.

‘Elite’ agent means
An elite agent is one who isn’t primarily focused on the money but understands the money is a byproduct of the outstanding service they offer. An elite agent understands their duty is to carry out daily routines in an efficient manner day in, day out. Their focus is on how they can benefit the client. They show empathy whilst being firm enough to offer constructive advice. An elite agent is a problem-solver who removes the stress of selling or buying. They are consistent, professional, calm and modest.
