We Are Real Estate

Clay Brodie: Tackling sales head-on

When Clay Brodie traded in rugby for real estate, he brought the same principles of hard work and being a team player to his sales role at Ray White Woollahra

On getting into real estate
I was a professional rugby union player with the objective to play at the highest level (the Wallabies). My father pulled me aside one day when I was about 20 and suggested that I need to make sure I had something to fall back on after rugby. I had no idea what I wanted to with my life, however a family friend recommended that I call one of his mates who had just opened a small agency in Paddington. After a month of unpaid work experience with the director Randall Kemp, I was offered a job within his agency. He is now my business partner and I am a director of the same agency. The story goes on but this should give you a good outline.

The happiest moment in my career
1. Becoming a director of Ray White Woollahra
2. Growing my own team of two associates
3. Selling 30 properties in one year

The most memorable moment
2 Council Street, Bondi Junction which sold for $2,800,000 which was $500,000 over reserve and had been in the same family for 70 years.

Best advice he’s received
Consistency is key; Outwork the competition; You have to spend money to make money.

Biggest challenge
An oversupply of agents who are not experienced and are in a way making things up as they go along. I think the way to fix this is by making qualifications harder to get and ensure that the training and learning they go through is far more in-depth and detailed to prepare new agents for the industry.

Change for good?
I would like to see progression amongst agents and the techniques they use to market and sell property. I am a big believer in thinking outside the box and enjoy seeing young and old agents try new things.

‘Elite’ agent means
Someone who can supply a high level of service and results for their clients. I also believe that the way the agent interacts with other lesser-experienced agents and assists them to become successful also reflects an elite agent.

#WeAreRealEstate is a series of short interviews with 140 agents all over Australia exploring the industry’s hopes, concerns, future challenges, and what it really means to be an Elite Agent.
