We Are Real Estate

Carmel Gardiner: Listen closely

Abel McGrath Property Group’s Carmel Gardiner says listening is key to adapting change to suit the market and the consumer

On getting into real estate
I chose real estate after having my family and decided I wanted a career.  I wanted a long-term option, not a part-time role in retail.

The happiest moment in my career
Being involved with people who want to grow and develop into roles they possibly never thought they could achieve.

Best advice she’s received
Listen to people and understand their needs. Be respectful, honest and genuine.

Biggest challenge
The real estate industry is constantly changing. The challenge is being able to adapt to suit the market, the consumer and to think ahead of the changes and being prepared. Listening to consumers’ needs and actually connecting with them in person is a high priority in our business.

Change for good?
I would like the standards of our industry to be elevated. Selling or leasing a person’s home is something we need to value and to be representing ourselves as trusted partners with our clients.

‘Elite’ agent means
My definition is someone who puts their clients’ needs first and takes the time to understand their position.  It’s not about ME.

#WeAreRealEstate is a series of short interviews with 140 agents all over Australia, exploring the industry’s hopes, concerns, future challenges, and what it really means to be an Elite Agent.
