Filmmakers’ cinematic mountain retreat hits the market

A stunning 1973 residence in Idyllwild is now on the market, having been reimagined into a dramatic, design-forward retreat by filmmakers Emrhys Cooper and Donal Brophy, who describe their creation as "James Bond villain meets exiled Italian count."

The High Rock House, perched nearly 6,000 feet above sea level on a private ridge, underwent an extensive renovation in 2020 that took the structure down to its bare bones.

The filmmakers, Emrhys Cooper and Donal Brophy, transformed it into a sanctuary that blends mountain ruggedness with theatrical glamour.

The two-storey, three-bedroom property sits on nearly 0.45 acres and features sweeping views of Mount San Jacinto.

Its renovation focused on the property’s indoor-outdoor living on both levels, with spaces designed for both storytelling and escape.

“We infused the property with eclectic glamour, storytelling, and a deep respect for place—creating a retreat that feels both intimate and cinematic,” said Mr Cooper, an award-winning writer, director, producer, and actor who founded Idyllwild Pictures.

The main living level includes an expansive great room with fold-away glass doors that open to a view deck.

The newly designed kitchen features stone countertops, stainless steel appliances, an oversized island with prep and farmhouse sinks, custom cabinetry, and a bay-window breakfast nook.

The primary suite offers panoramic views, a sitting room, claw-foot soaking tub, walk-in closet, and a chic bath, creating a luxurious mountain retreat experience.

The lower level serves as an entertainment zone with a billiards room, secondary kitchen, office, and pub-style wet bar ideal for après-ski or evening gatherings.

This versatile space makes the home suitable for hosting, creative retreats, or multigenerational living.

Outdoor living is emphasised throughout the property with multiple terraces, decks, and patios extending from nearly every room.

A cedar spa and adjacent sauna, famously enjoyed even during snowy winter evenings, provide wellness amenities with mountain views.

Mr Brophy, a writer, producer, actor, and former restaurateur who owned popular New York establishments including Mary Queen of Scots and Highlands, brought his hospitality experience to the home’s entertaining spaces.

“We welcomed a slew of celebrity guests in my restaurants — Daniel Day-Lewis and Stephen Spielberg, to name a few,” he said, bringing that same welcoming atmosphere to High Rock House.

The area has historically attracted creative individuals and celebrities.

The home is on the market for $1.4 million (AUD$2 million) with its furniture package, valued at $100,000, included in the sale, offering buyers the opportunity to own a turnkey mountain retreat with cinematic flair.

Daniel Miracle from Compass has the listing.
