Mel Gibson’s old Adelaide villa hits the market

A landmark Queen Anne villa in Adelaide's prestigious Unley with ties to Hollywood star Mel Gibson has been listed for sale, boasting a blend of historic charm and modern amenities.

The Hughes Street property, built around 1900 for a decorated ship’s captain, underwent a renovation after the current owners purchased it in 2014.

The four-bedroom home features a new granite-topped kitchen, updated bathrooms, and open-plan living spaces while preserving character elements like an iconic turret, tessellated return veranda, and elaborate pressed tin ceilings.

According to realestate.com.au, the property was previously linked to Academy Award-winning actor and director Mel Gibson, though technically never owned by him directly.

It was purchased in 1990 under Lasano Pty Ltd, a company directed by Gibson’s Icon Productions partner Bruce Davey.

“Gibson’s first wife Robyn Moore was from Adelaide and that’s what prompted him to buy it,” current owner Nicole told realestate.com.au.

“It wasn’t a very long period of time that Gibson was associated with the home and it was maybe about two owners before us.”

Gibson spent considerable time in South Australia during the late 1980s, particularly while filming the third instalment of the Mad Max franchise.

The Unley home served as a sanctuary for Gibson and his then-wife Robyn during their Australian visits.

The current owners were initially attracted to the property’s exterior beauty rather than its celebrity connection.

The home’s expansive gardens have been central to family life for the current owners, who have three young boys.

A decades-old elm tree in the rear yard has hosted numerous celebrations and provided a natural playground.

The property is being marketed by Williams Real Estate without a price guide, with offers closing on Tuesday, May 13.

The vendors are relocating to be closer to their children’s school but hope another family will appreciate the home’s unique combination of historic character, modern amenities, and idyllic surroundings.
