Own a piece of Provence: historic castle for sale

The largest castle in Provence, known as Chateau De La Verdière, has just been put on the market for US$19.7 million.

Located in the hilly village of La Verdière in southeastern France, the castle is considered a “true rarity for history and authenticity enthusiasts”.

Dating back to the 15th century, the Chateau De La Verdière was first constructed as a fortress by the Castellane family, one of the oldest and most illustrious noble lines in Provence.

According to Architectural Digest, the castle has changed hands several times, with European aristocrats such as the House of Ventimiglia and the de Forbin family taking ownership.

In the 18th century, Louis-Roch de Forbin d’Oppède extensively renovated and expanded the property, turning it into a work of art.

In recognition of its historical and cultural significance, the home and its surrounding park grounds were classified as historic monuments in 1986.

According to the castle’s official website, Chateau De La Verdière fell into disrepair during the 1970s and 1980s, despite repeated requests to the French Ministry of Culture to protect it.

In 2003, the castle was purchased by Frédéric Champaver, who undertook an extensive renovation to restore it to its original glory.

The castle boasts an extensive collection of period paintings, tapestries, and fine furnishings, making it a modern marvel with original history and charm.

Although currently a private residence, the listing suggests that Chateau De La Verdière could be purchased and turned into a hotel.

The castle has 50 rooms, with space for an additional 25. Additionally, it sits within a 16ha park, which includes two swimming pools, equestrian stables, and a dressage arena.

Sitting atop the highest point in La Verdière, the castle offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, making it a popular tourist destination.

The castle’s rich history and luxurious features are sure to attract potential buyers who are looking for a unique investment opportunity.

The sale of Chateau De La Verdière offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a piece of history while also enjoying the comforts of modern luxury. With its rich history, breathtaking views, and luxurious features, it is sure to appeal to history and authenticity enthusiasts, as well as potential hotel investors.

The castle is listed by Todd Herlin, Aaron Kirman and Francois Letroquer of AKG | Christie’s International Real Estate.
