We Are Real Estate

Grant Matterson: Timely sale

Sometimes the most memorable sale has nothing to do with price – just ask LJ Hooker Narrabeen’s Grant Matterson

On getting into real estate
I owned a retail shop and people suggested I would be good in real estate because I was personable.

The happiest moment in my career
I am always so happy when I am a part of someone buying a property or selling one, and it is especially satisfying when I am able to do both for the same family.

The most memorable moment
I had an estate sale for a house where the family lived interstate and they could not be there to oversee the estate. The property was sold with all its belongings staying, which included at least 100 clocks, clothes and broken cars. It made the papers as the Clock House.

Best advice he’s received
Real estate is more about people than property, plus grit will outperform talent when talent does not have grit.

Biggest challenge
Agents coming into the industry after doing a five-day course and allowed to act like they are professionals is misleading. There should be a cadetship and more extensive training like any other apprenticeship.

Change for good?
A transition period between entering the industry and being a professional agent.

‘Elite’ agent means
Someone who is willing to understand the client’s needs before their own wants.

#WeAreRealEstate is a series of short interviews with 140 agents all over Australia exploring the industry’s hopes, concerns, future challenges, and what it really means to be an Elite Agent.
