Former NZ Prime Minister Dame Jacinda Ardern and husband Clarke Gayford list their Auckland family home ahead of an 8 July auction.

Dame Jacinda Ardern, and husband Clarke Gayford have listed their Auckland family home for sale, marking a clear chapter close as the couple settle into life across the Tasman.

The four-bedroom, two-bathroom bungalow in Sandringham is being marketed by Ray White Kingsland, with an auction date set for July 8.

Built in the 1930s, the weatherboard home blends period character with a modern extension. The listing describes it as “perfect for the daily rhythm of family life” – a charmingly ordinary pitch for a property that housed one of New Zealand’s most prominent political families.

Inside, the original character gives way to a light-filled modern extension, with high ceilings and large windows opening onto the garden.

The layout balances open-plan family living with quieter retreats, including a rear bedroom and lounge with an updated en suite.

The home is fully ducted for heating, and multiple living spaces flow out to a 643-square-metre garden, including a deck that Clarke reportedly built himself while caring for their baby Neve.

The property is also marketed as private and “exceptionally secure,” a detail unsurprising given its former occupant.

Jacinda purchased the property with Clarke in 2018 for NZ$1.74 million (A$1.6 million).

According to OneRoof, the home now carries an estimated value of NZ$2.21 million (A$2.03 million), suggesting a tidy paper gain of around NZ$470,000 over seven years. No price guide has been set for the auction.

The sale fits neatly into a broader relocation story. In February, a statement issued on behalf of Jacinda confirmed the family had been travelling “for a few years now.”

“For the moment, they’re basing themselves out of Australia – they have work there, and it brings the added bonus of more time back home in New Zealand,” the statement read, according to RNZ.

Before settling in Australia, Jacinda, Clarke and their now eight-year-old daughter were based in the United States, where Jacinda held two fellowships at Harvard University. She has reportedly been house hunting on Sydney’s northern beaches, looking at properties in Curl Curl and Freshwater.
