6 reasons you should never outsource your social media

When people recommend the outsourcing of  social media updates, it literally scares our “Tech in the City”, Lisa B.

If you insist on outsourcing your social media, you are putting the reputation of your company and your brand into someone into someone else’s hands. Just consider that it takes roughly 1000 status updates to build a reputation, it only takes one to destroy it.

Let me put it this way…. would you let someone pretend they were you at a work function? Would you let someone say they were you on the phone? It’s the same thing with social media. To be successful, you need to be who you say you are.

Listed are six extremely good reasons why you should never outsource you social media status updates:

  1. Mistakes DO happen. I have seen it time and time again where people have meant to post updates to their personal page and they have posted things to their business page. I have done it and I am only managing a few pages myself! Imagine giving that responsibility to someone you don’t know – someone who could be managing hundreds of pages at once. They could completely mix up your business, they could also post personal opinions on your page by mistake. The result could be devastating. If you saw on the news around ANZAC day, the comedian with her opinions about ANZAC day, and the media exposure she gained. One update like that posted accidentally on your business page? No…. You don’t want that.
  2. People you outsource to, might not understand your brand. You don’t want to have the wrong company culture portrayed. Whoever does your social media must eat, breath, sleep and most importantly, understand your brand. No one knows your company, products/services, or your customers like you do.
  3. Post wrong information. Some people recommend outsourcing your social media overseas. They could damage your brand by posting completely wrong information. If their command of the English language is poor, you could be in trouble. Social media, most of the time, is live to air, it’s real time. Updates could be posted that goes against your policy. For example, if your company does not believe in auctions and an article is posted saying how great auctions are.
  4. Social media is all about building relationships and networking. The people that work in your business need to be building those relationships.. You need to network with your clients. Build relationships – build communities. Your social media is your personality and the personality of the business. If you are not portraying your personality on your page – you are not representing who you are and what your company is about.
  5. By listening and talking to your people, you get to understand your market. You get to hear what your clients are wanting and what they need. Who’s doing the talking and who’s doing the listening?
  6. You can have your social media take care of within half an hour a day. Think of it, as working on your business. This is the future of gaining listings. This is where potential clients know you Or they will get to know you.

There are simply some things you shouldn’t outsource; social media updates are some of those things. Yes, outsource the set up, the structure, the framework. However never your social media updates and responses. Once someone makes a status update, it’s there. If it is inappropriate or just plain wrong – your company pages could go viral for all the wrong reasons. The out sources don’t know you, you don’t know them – they don’t know your business. Don’t rush into any outsourcing.
