VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

Absolutely brand new viruses come out all the time, but more often than not, they are actually just re-hashes of old viruses, so having good up to date anti-virus is a very effective control against that.

If we look at big data breaches and hacks that have hit the press over the last ten years, there is one thing that’s been very consistent. It was really a breakdown of basic hygiene, which let the organisation down. Basic hygiene extends to things like doing updates on your software, your operating system and your application that you use.

I know that sometimes you get these annoying messages that says, hey, you’ve got this update. And you keep on going, yeah, delay, delay, delay. My strong advice would be, don’t delay. Just make some time whether it be once a week, or once a fortnight, take out half an hour and actually do those updates, because effectively, new vulnerabilities are discovered all the time. Manufacturers put a lot of time and effort in to actually fixing them and the updates are really designed, not only to provide new features to your software, but will actually plug security gaps as well.
