Katharine Hepburn’s former New York City townhouse is now on the market for $7.2 million, over two decades after the Hollywood icon passed away at age 96.
Hepburn acquired the five-storey residence in Manhattan’s historic Turtle Bay enclave in 1931 and lived there until her death in 2003, according to the Robb Report.
The estate sold the property a year later for nearly $4 million to the Astoria Property Group, associated with a family from Mexico.
Hepburn, renowned for her distinctive New England accent, rose to fame in 1932 with her role opposite John Barrymore in A Bill of Divorcement.
Throughout her illustrious career, she starred in over 40 films and won four Oscars for her performances in Morning Glory, Guess Whoโs Coming to Dinner, The Lion in Winter, and On Golden Pond.
At the time of her passing, Hepburn also owned a home on Long Island Sound.
The townhouse, originally built in the late 1890s, spans 5.8m in width and features four bedrooms and four bathrooms across 418sq m.
Marketed as the “epitome of New York glamour,” the property boasts a stone-tiled entry foyer leading to a gourmet kitchen with custom cabinetry, stone countertops, top-tier appliances, and a built-in breakfast table and banquette.
A butlerโs pantry, with a wine cooler, connects to the fireside dining room, which opens onto a 92sq m bi-level flagstone patio and a garden with access to a private park shared by residents of the surrounding townhouses.
The second floor houses a formal living room with a marble fireplace, a terrace accessible through French doors, a wet bar, and a library/media room.
The third floor contains the primary suite with a fireplace, a walk-in closet, a bath with dual sinks, a clawfoot soaking tub, a separate shower, and a mirrored vanity installed by Hepburn.
Another bedroom on this level serves as an office and seating area.
The top floor includes two additional bedrooms with their own bathrooms and walk-in closets.
Listed by Lisa Larson of Sothebyโs International Realty, the property also features a basement with a wine cellar, half-bath, laundry room, and storage space.
