A two-bedroom South Kensington mews house once owned by Madonna and Guy Ritchie has returned to the market, offering tenants the chance to live inside a slice of celebrity history.
The 1,540 sq ft Queen’s Gate Mews property features two bathrooms and a study, and is being marketed as much for its on-screen history as its interiors. It is available for £2,075 a week (approximately A$3,977) through Dexters South Kensington & Knightsbridge.
Guy Ritchie and Madonna lived in the house during the early years of their relationship, and Guy is understood to have designed the kitchen himself.
He later used the property as a filming location for his close friend Matthew Vaughn’s 2004 film Layer Cake, where it doubled as the London home of Daniel Craig’s character – the role widely credited with leading to his casting as James Bond the following year.
The Queen’s Arms pub, directly opposite the house, features in the film’s backdrop.
The mews has form beyond that single production. It also appears in Nicolas Roeg and Donald Cammell’s Performance (1970) and in The Bank Job (2008), starring Jason Statham.
Queen’s Gate Mews itself dates to the early 1860s, built by William Jackson as coach house and stable accommodation for the grander houses on the surrounding streets.
It now comprises 86 properties along its cobbled through-road, used for a mix of commercial and residential purposes, and forms part of the Queen’s Gate Conservation Area, designated in 1969.
The mews survived a direct hit from a high explosive bomb during the Second World War.
Inside, the ground floor is an open-plan living space with dark timber flooring, a stainless-steel kitchen built around a Falcon range cooker, and a dining area for six.
Upstairs, the principal bedroom has an en suite with twin basins, and the second bedroom benefits from air conditioning. The main bathroom retains an exposed brick archway alongside Carrara marble walls and a freestanding bath.
