Joe Grgic has never run a marathon before.

But in November, the Harcourts North Geelong director will line up alongside 60,000 runners in New York City to take on one of the world’s most famous races.

The goal isn’t a personal best – it’s fundraising for Barwon Health, the regional health service that operates University Hospital Geelong and provides care across the Barwon South West region.

Securing a spot wasn’t straightforward.

With less than three per cent of ballot applicants gaining entry, Joe secured his place through a charity allocation, which requires participants to raise funds for their chosen cause.

For a self-described casual runner, the training has meant a significant step up.

“I usually run five to six kilometres three times a week, but I am now out to 16 and a half kilometres and continually growing on that distance,” Joe said.

“I have secured my spot. Now, I am just doing the training.”

His regular sessions take him along the Barwon River as he works around past sports injuries to build his endurance.

All funds raised will go directly to Barwon Health, supporting facilities including the Andrew Love Cancer Centre and the development of a new Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Adam Fiteni, CEO of Harcourts Victoria, said Joe’s effort reflected the agency’s community focus.

“His willingness to take on such a demanding physical challenge for the betterment of our local healthcare system is truly inspiring,” Adam said.

“He is setting a remarkable standard for community leadership, and we are incredibly proud to support him.”
