Matt Gibbon spent five years putting his body on the line for the Melbourne Rebels. Now the former Wallaby is channelling that intensity into a new arena – residential real estate in Ballina.

The prop, who played 85 Super Rugby games and six Test matches before a severe knee injury forced his retirement in 2023, has joined Harcourts Northern Rivers as an agent.

“Real estate drew me in because it has that exact same grind as rugby,” Matt said.

“You have to put in the work, stay determined, and the results follow.”

While Matt is a qualified electrician, his injury ruled out returning to the trade – crawling through roof spaces was no longer an option. But his building knowledge has proved useful in his new role.

“Coming from my building and electrical background, I already understood property, so it was a natural fit,” he said.

“Plus, I think my knees are quite relieved I’m no longer navigating ceiling cavities.”

Harcourts Northern Rivers principal Natalie Leslie said Matt’s background gives him an edge in the regional market.

“It is a huge asset that he grew up on farms and large acreages,” Natalie said.

“There aren’t too many younger agents with that kind of hands-on, lived experience.”

Matt said he was drawn to Harcourts’ team culture, which reminded him of professional sport.

“They genuinely put people first and believe in doing the right thing,” he said.

“We have each other’s backs.”

The transition hasn’t been without challenges. Matt is hitting the streets with the same intensity he brought to training.

“The learning curve has been steep but genuinely rewarding,” he said.

“I’m out there calling people, door knocking, and getting in front of the community. You never know who is behind a door or how you can help them through the massive process of buying and selling a home.”

Natalie said his attitude made him an immediate fit for the team.

“Matt brings great confidence, and he is really genuine,” she said.

“He wants to succeed and is entirely committed to putting in the time and effort.”
