First National Real Estate has recognised a Queensland teenager for her role in making Cystic Fibrosis medication more widely available.
13-year-old Evie Marshall received the Leadership Award at the 2019 Seven News Young Achiever Awards on Friday after successfully campaigning for Australians with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) to have access to life-extending medication.
The medication, called Orkambi, previously cost $250,000 per patient, per year and was formerly rejected for subsidisation by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee. Miss Marshall lobbied politicians and the manufacturers of Orkambi to make the medication affordable while managing her own CF.
After three years of campaigning, the medication is now sold at $39 per patient, per month. As a result, over 1,300 Australians with CF can now access Orkambi and live up to 20 years longer.
The award was presented by First National Real Estate CEO, Ray Ellis, who noted Ms Marshall stood out amongst a strong field of young achievers.
