Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford buy LA hills estate

Carey Mulligan and husband Marcus Mumford have added to their substantial property portfolio, picking up a Hacienda-style estate in the Los Angeles hills.

According to The Dirt, the Oscar-nominated British actress and her musician husband, who were reportedly childhood pen pals, paid US$6.5 million for the Spanish-inspired home, high above the Sunset Strip.

Records show the famous couple got a slight US$25,000 discount on the property, which was built in the late 1920s and has since been extensively renovated with a mix of period details and modern amenities.

Situated on just under a quarter-acre block, the creamy stucco and red terracotta-roof structure features four bedrooms and six bathrooms spread across nearly 465sq m of living space on three levels.

Highlights include a living room adorned with a fireplace and family room, with French doors opening out to a tiled patio, plus a formal dining room that connects to a sleekly designed kitchen outfitted with custom cabinetry imported from London, an eat-in island, and high-end Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances.

Upstairs, the master retreat boasts a Juliette balcony and walk-in closet, as well as a luxe bathroom equipped with a large soaking tub and separate shower.

There’s also a movie theatre and production studio; and outside, the resort-like grounds are fully hedged, and host a pool flanked by an elevated lounge area with a fire-pit and covered alfresco dining area with its own kitchenette.

On top of that, there’s also a two-car garage and plenty of parking for guests.

The couple already own a London pied-à-terre and a stunning 16th-century farmhouse tucked away in the English countryside.
