Ray White Goulburn staffer to shave head for grandfather

Tamika Straney, a sales administration team member at Ray White Goulburn, will shave her head on 23 October for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave, aiming to raise $10,000 for blood cancer support and research.

The 20-year-old decided to take part after learning earlier this year that her grandfather, Robert, now 80, had been living with chronic myeloid leukaemia for 15 years without telling her.

Robert and her grandmother were constant figures in Tamika’s childhood, helping raise her and her sister while their parents worked.

“I felt quite sad that he hadn’t told me sooner, but I was also happy to know he is doing so well,” Tamika said.

“Once I found out, I knew I wanted to do something to help others facing the same fight. That’s when I decided on the shave.”

Tamika has been with Ray White Goulburn for six months and has already raised more than $6,000 towards her goal, with support from her workplace and the local community.

“Raising money means being able to help individuals and families who are going through standard treatment and may not be able to afford the required care,” she said.

“My grandfather inspired me to take part, and I want to make him proud while helping ensure no family has to navigate blood cancer alone.”

The public shave will take place at the Ray White Goulburn office on 23 October, where colleagues, community members and family will gather to watch Tamika part with her hair for the cause.
