Take me home, country roads: John Dever’s estate hits the market

A portion of John Denverโ€™s cherished estate in Aspen is now on the market, nearly three decades after the legendary singer-songwriter’s passing.

This piece of property, nestled in Aspenโ€™s prestigious gated Starwood community, was custom-built in the early 1970s during the peak of Denverโ€™s career.

While the main residence remains off the market, two buildings on an adjacent parcel are available for just under US$8.5 million, according to the Robb Report.

Initially constructed as a guesthouse and recording studio, this property last changed hands in April for close to US$4.8 million.

It has since undergone significant renovations, transforming it into a fully-fledged home.

The two structures, with their wood siding and metal roofs, now offer five bedrooms and five bathrooms within over 269sq m of rustic living space.

Remarkably, the property still features a stained-glass installation from Denverโ€™s era.

Set on five acres of land, the property offers stunning valley and mountain views, located about 15 minutes from downtown Aspen.

The single-storey residence boasts a spacious great room with wood-beam ceilings and a wall of sliding glass doors that open to an extensive deck.

This area includes a cozy living space with a striking stone and copper wood-burning fireplace surrounded by built-in shelving.

The kitchen is modern and sleek, featuring a central island bench, stainless steel appliances, and an adjacent dining area.

The primary suite includes a fireplace and an inviting bath with dual vanities and a large shower.

Outside, the propertyโ€™s separately deeded lot includes a hot tub and a step-down gathering area perfect for outdoor relaxation and entertainment.

Thereโ€™s also a one-car garage.

Listed by PJ Bory of Christieโ€™s International Real Estate Aspen Snowmass, the property comes with a $750 annual HOA fee that grants access to Starwoodโ€™s exclusive amenities.

These include 24-hour security, postal and fire stations, a conference room, tennis courts, cross-country ski trails, horse pastures, and over 70 acres of meadows and hiking trails.

Denver, one of the 1970s’ most popular acoustic performers, was known for hits like Take Me Home, Country Roads, Sunshine on My Shoulders, and Rocky Mountain High.

Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and a Grammy winner, he also founded the environmental foundation Windstar.

Denver died in October 1997 when an experimental plane he was piloting crashed into Californiaโ€™s Monterey Bay, and his ashes were scattered across the Rocky Mountains.
