Shane Sullivan has launched his own independent real estate agency, SULLIVAN, in Sydney’s inner west, the region where he grew up and has spent his entire 18-year career.
Shane, who grew up in Concord, says the move follows nearly two decades working within an established agency and is as much personal as professional given his family and community ties to the area.
He positions SULLIVAN as an alternative to large corporate structures, built around strong branding and marketing, a personal client experience, considered property presentation and a focus on relationships and results.
“I don’t think there is ever a perfect time to start a business. At some point you have to back yourself, accept that there will be challenges and get on with it,” Shane said.
“I’ve spent 18 years learning the industry, building relationships and understanding what clients actually value, and SULLIVAN is really the opportunity to put all of that together in my own way.
“I think difficult markets can actually be deeply revealing. They give good agents an opportunity to showcase what they can really do.”
The launch comes in a market Shane describes as challenging, a decision he connects to how his career began.
“I started my career in 2008, right in the middle of the GFC. It was a difficult market, but in many ways it was the best possible introduction to real estate,” he said.
“You quickly learn that you can’t control the market, but you can control how you respond to it. When conditions are tough, your ability to negotiate, communicate, build relationships and find solutions really gets tested. Those lessons have stayed with me throughout my career.”
During his career, Shane was recognised by Domain.com.au as its Rising Star for NSW, an award presented to the state’s best agent under 30.
“I was fortunate to have some success relatively early in my career. But looking back, I think the recognition was less important than what the experience taught me,” he said.
“Real estate is a people business, and the agents who continue to develop their skills, build genuine relationships and take responsibility for their results are the ones who create longevity in this industry.”
Shane says SULLIVAN has been built with a longer-term ambition beyond client service: creating an environment where agents are, in his words, genuinely the heroes of the brand.
His vision is to give agents the platform, marketing and support to build their own profile and reputation, rather than having their identity sit behind a corporate brand or an all-powerful principal.
For Shane, the best agents should be able to become recognised in their own right, while still having the backing of an agency invested in their growth.
