Robyn Agius: Giving back while building success in Mackay’s Pioneer Valley

Mackay real estate agent Robyn Agius has built a thriving business while donating $1,000 from every sale to local schools and charities. After questioning traditional commission splits, she joined Area Specialist to take control of her career and community impact. "When you're not giving half your earnings to your agency, you can help a lot of people."

Robyn Agius has transformed her real estate career by taking control of her business and giving back to her community like few others.

Ms Agius’s journey into real estate began unexpectedly about five years ago, during a challenging time in her life when a chance encounter with a real estate principal opened the door to a fulfilling new career.

That conversation led her to resign from her previous position, which she loved but found was demanding too many hours and in turn, affecting her family.

With a background in business ownership and senior management, Ms Agius quickly developed her own approach to real estate.

As her confidence grew and she began generating her own listings, she started questioning the traditional agency model.

“As I gathered my own listings, did my own marketing and worked out my own way of doing business, I began to question why I was giving them half of my hard-earned money,” she said.

“I’m a bit of a numbers girl, and I thought, ‘I’m going to have to work just as many hours as my previous job to match my previous earnings so it was the commission split that just had to go.โ€

After 18 months in the industry, Ms Agius made the decision to join Area Specialist, a move that has not only improved her work-life balance but also allowed her to make significant contributions to the local community.

“When you’ve got your own time and you answer to your clients, not a boss, it’s completely different,” Ms Agius said.

“I could be working till 11 o’clock at night, but then I could also have the next morning off entirely.โ€

โ€œIf I was working for an agency, I would still be working late to get the job done for my client, but I would also be turning up to the office at 8:30 the next morning.”

Ms Agius specialises in Mackay’s Pioneer Valley, an area she’s passionate about after living there for 22 years.

“From the beach at East Mackay through to Eungella is where I focus most of my energy,” she said.

“That’s where home has been, and I know the region well. I also cover the northern beaches of the Hibiscus Coast and South toward Sarina.

โ€œI own property in the region, so I’m personally invested in ensuring we retain good prices for our property owners.”

Last year, Ms Agius took a significant step by purchasing and renovating an old building in Marian, establishing the only real estate agency with a shopfront in the Pioneer Valley.

Ms Agius credits her calming demeanour, which she attributes partly to her extensive experience in the health and wellness industry, to why vendors enjoy working with her.

โ€œCustomer service isnโ€™t a thing, it is the thing, I especially love looking after the older generation, they are delightful, honest and have fabulous stories to share.โ€

Within Area Specialist, she has won Top Regional Salesperson last year and their Platinum Award.

What truly sets Ms Agius apart is her generosity and heart for her community.

For every property she sells, she donates $1,000 to a local school or charity making a meaningful difference where it matters most.

“When you are not having to give half your earnings to your agency, you can do some amazing stuff,โ€ she said.

โ€œYou can help a lot of people.โ€

“Instead of paying a commission split, I can do more to support my community.โ€

Her generosity has become a defining part of her brand, with clients proudly choosing her for her genuine commitment to giving back to the community.

“I’ve had listings come through because when Iโ€™ve presented their appraisal, they see what I do, they say, ‘Wow, that’s amazing. That’s something that’s important to us too,โ€ she said.

Currently, she’s working with Mackay Riding for the Disabled to help erect a cover for their arena, drawing on her background in construction to assist the organisation and sponsors the Mirani Swimming Club.

For agents considering the Area Specialist model, Ms Agius said it offers freedom and opportunity.

โ€œI still don’t understand why some really amazing agents are still flying under the banner of another agency, when they could be doing their own gig and paying for their own holidays instead of their bosses’,” she said.
