Historic riverside mill with Hollywood connections hits market for £3.55 million

A landmark former Georgian water mill with connections to Oscar-winning actor Sir John Mills has been listed for sale for the first time in nearly 50 years, priced at £3.55 million (AUD$7.2 million).

Located in Denham Village, Buckinghamshire, Wellers Mead offers over 8,000 square feet of living space including seven bedrooms, five reception rooms, and a luxury indoor swimming pool and spa complex that was once regularly used by Sir John Mills himself.

The property was acquired by the current owners in 1975 after an intense bidding war with Mills, who had developed a fondness for the area while filming at nearby Denham Film Studios.

According to the current owner, despite losing the auction, Mills became a good friend and frequent visitor to the property, particularly enjoying the indoor swimming pool and spa area they had installed.

During this period, Denham village had transformed into a veritable celebrity hotspot, with an impressive roster of A-list residents alongside Sir John Mills.

The exclusive neighbourhood boasted neighbours including James Bond star Roger Moore, singing sensation Dusty Springfield, television personality Cilla Black, and Harry Saltzman, the influential co-producer of the James Bond film franchise.

The historic building traces its origins back to the 17th century, when it served as a corn mill.

It was rebuilt in the 18th century as part of the Denham Court Estate before being converted into a residence in the 1920s by Rector Mr. Battisford, with designs attributed to renowned local architect Francis Bacon.

With its Dutch-inspired gabling and elegant mint green-shuttered windows set into a crisp white façade, the property became one of the most photographed buildings in Denham.

The River Misbourne meanders through the grounds via the historic mill race, creating stunning waterside gardens.

The main house provides 6,827 square feet of accommodation across three floors, featuring formal and informal living spaces ideal for both entertaining and family life.

The property also includes a detached two-bedroom annexe above a three-car garage.

When Sir John Mills and his wife Mary Hayley Bell were living in Denham, they regularly entertained Hollywood royalty at their home, Hills House, with frequent guests including acting legends David Niven, Laurence Olivier, Jack Lemmon and Richard Attenborough.

Despite its rural tranquility, Wellers Mead offers excellent connectivity, being just 18 miles from Central London with direct train services taking only 22 minutes from Denham station.

Gary Hersham, Founding Director of Beauchamp Estates, one of the joint selling agents, said the property had unique appeal.

“For sale for only the second time in the last 100 years, this wonderful home boarders on the River Misbourne. Wellers Mead offers a rare opportunity to buy a landmark house in a stunning setting in the Denham Conservation Area.
