School Zones – is the home you want to buy in the right school catchment area?

Real estate agents say securing a home within a boundary to a high performing school can add hundreds of thousands of dollars to a purchase price.

Many buyers now say, “Zone first, postcode second”. To help assist property searchers, Domain has now launched the new Domain School Zone feature where parents can search for their property knowing which school catchment it falls into.

Domain School Zone is a first for the Australian real estate industry and it is the culmination of significant research and data collection.

Domain School Zone enables parents to see whether the property they are interested in falls within the catchment zones of particular schools. The type of school is also clearly represented – whether it is primary, secondary, a special school, co-ed, years K-6 or K-12.

Domain School Zone is a first for the Australian real estate industry and it is the culmination of significant research and data collection by the Domain Product and Technology team.

Domain Executive Editor Stephen Nicholls said the ability to easily discover whether homes fall in the catchment zones for leading schools was a “game-changer” for both buyers and sellers. “Agents say the difference between one side of the street and the other can be 10 per cent, based purely on schooling,” said Mr Nicholls. “And much more than 10 per cent if buyers are fighting over specific properties at auction.”

Some capital city current hot spots are:

Adelaide: Zones for Adelaide High School, Brighton Secondary School, Marryatville High School, Glenunga International High School, Unley High School, The Norwood Morialta High School, Westbourne Park Primary and Colonel Light Gardens

The Domain School Zone feature has a vast number of schools listed – data from schools and government sources has been researched manually. The only situation where a school may not appear under a listing is if the school in the area doesn’t actually require students to come from within the local catchment or if a property listing doesn’t have a full address.
