Knight Frank is re-establishing a presence in Tasmania, opening two dual-branded offices with McGrath in Hobart and Launceston. The Hobart office is new, while the Launceston office is an existing McGrath business that has rebranded under the joint McGrath Knight Frank banner.
The move takes the number of dual-branded McGrath Knight Frank offices nationally to seven.
Both Tasmanian offices will be headed by Josh Hart, an existing McGrath franchisee with 18 years’ experience in the state’s property market, including more than four as Principal of McGrath Launceston.
Josh has recorded more than $1 billion in career sales in Tasmania, won an internal McGrath award in 2026 for the highest number of sales across the network over the financial year, and was named Residential Salesperson of the Year for Tasmania at the 2024 REIT awards, where McGrath Launceston also picked up Sales Agency of the Year and Sales Team of the Year.
“Our dual branded offices in Tasmania will bring enormous value to the local community and clients, with the ability to leverage networks and expertise right around Australia, as well as internationally,” he said.
The offices will offer residential and commercial sales, property management, commercial valuations and concierge services. Paul Reed has recently joined as a lead agent in the Hobart office, and Josh said further growth was planned across residential and commercial teams in both offices, with an active recruitment campaign underway.
“The appetite for both residential and commercial property in Tasmania is huge, but with limited supply and property being tightly held, we are seeing strong growth,” he said.
Knight Frank sold its Tasmanian franchise, which had operated for 27 years, in 2024. Knight Frank Chief Executive Officer James Patterson said the firm had retained a foothold in the state through its Asset Management Services teams in Hobart and Launceston, which manage 10 shopping centres for Region Group, and a valuations team.
“Knight Frank has a strong brand and long history in Tasmania, with a franchise that operated for 27 years, and we have been committed to returning to the state once again,” James said.
McGrath Chief Executive Officer John McGrath said Tasmania’s residential market had shown resilience against a slowing national sector.
“Tasmania’s property market has evolved significantly in recent years, fuelled by interstate migration, lifestyle shifts and improving infrastructure, with tens of billions of dollars in projects in the pipeline, including a $200 million terminal expansion development at Hobart Airport due for completion in 2028.”
