John Goodman’s historic New Orleans mansion hits the market for US$4.75 million

A historic mansion in New Orleans' Garden District owned by John Goodman and with connections to multiple celebrities is now on the market offering a rare opportunity to own a piece of the city's cultural heritage.

The 5,000-square-foot Italianate-Greek Revival home at 2425 Coliseum Street, built in the 1850s, has been owned by Emmy-winning actor John Goodman for nearly two decades.

According to Chron, before Goodman, the property belonged to Academy Award-winning composer and Nine Inch Nails founder Trent Reznor.

The property, also known as the Joseph Merrick Jones House, has an even deeper connection to New Orleans culture.

The Goodmans are selling because they don’t need as much space anymore, though they plan to maintain a smaller residence in New Orleans.

According to the listing, the 175-year-old mansion boasts exceptional architectural details including deep double galleries, a sweeping staircase, floor-to-ceiling double-hung windows, and soaring 14-foot ceilings.

Despite its age, the raised wood-frame design has been meticulously maintained with remarkable structural integrity.

The interior features ornate ceiling medallions, marble mantels, intricate crown mouldings, and hand-painted hardwood floors that highlight the craftsmanship of a bygone era.

With three bedrooms and five bathrooms, the home offers ample space for comfortable living.

The standout cobalt-blue chef’s kitchen features elegant quartzite countertops and modern amenities.

The property also includes a converted dressing room that new owners could return to its original purpose or repurpose according to their needs.

The outdoor spaces are equally impressive, featuring a refreshing saltwater pool for hot Louisiana summers, a covered veranda perfect for entertaining, and a secluded courtyard oasis that provides privacy from the surrounding neighbourhood.

The estate sits on a double corner lot with the practical advantages of gated parking and a garage.

Its location in the Garden District adds to its appeal, placing the new owners in one of New Orleans’ most prestigious neighbourhoods.

The property is surrounded by oak-lined streets and remains walkable to Magazine Street shops while maintaining proximity to downtown’s energy.

Goodman, best known for roles in “Roseanne,” “The Big Lebowski,” and “The Righteous Gemstones,” has been a beloved local figure in New Orleans since relocating from California.

He made the move because he wanted to get away from Los Angeles, seeking the unique culture and atmosphere that New Orleans provides.
