Jack Freestone: From farm kid to property expert

From farm renovations to founding Buyer Collective, Jack Freestone's property journey spans first-time investments to multi-million dollar developments across Australia and New Zealand. His Brisbane-based buyer's agency now helps others navigate their biggest life purchases with the same careful scrutiny he applies to his own investments.

Jack Freestone’s journey from helping his parents renovate their family farm to founding a successful buyer’s agency has been driven by a lifelong passion for property and helping others make smart investments.

Growing up on a farm in Byron Bay’s hinterland, Jack was immersed in the world of property from an early age.

His parents were constantly renovating their family home and even built an additional house on their property.

“I was a farm kid. My parents were always renovating our family house,” Jack recalls.

“Throughout my childhood, I was helping with painting, renovating, landscaping, all that sort of stuff.”

Early property success

This early exposure to property development sparked a passion that would shape his career. Before his 20th birthday, Jack purchased his first investment property for $417,000 – a property that has since tripled in value.

After establishing himself in the Australian property market, Jack’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to Bali, where he started several cafes and a hostel.

However, it was in New Zealand where his property development career truly took off.

“I ended up meeting a couple that was really interested in property, but they weren’t really confident about it,” he explains.

“I found a one-into-two subdivision site and pitched it to this couple. They would fund it, we’d split the profits, and I’d do the whole project from start to finish.”

That successful first venture “snowballed” into approximately 18-19 projects worth between $20-25 million, ranging from small lot subdivisions to townhouses, new builds, and numerous house-flipping renovations.

Founding Buyer Collective

After returning to Australia during COVID and renovating properties on the Gold Coast and near Byron Bay, Jack made the natural progression to founding his buyer’s agency, Buyer Collective, in Brisbane.

“I’d already purchased probably more than 50 properties between the development, my own purchases, and helping friends and family over the years,” Jack says.

“I was really quite savvy and good at spotting potential and red flags. It just sort of came naturally.”

His agency primarily works with home buyers, (including first-time buyers, next-home buyers, and re-locators), but also serves investors and select luxury developers seeking premium sites in blue-chip locations around Brisbane.

A client-first approach

What sets Buyer Collective apart is Jack’s commitment to personally overseeing every purchase and physically inspecting every property.

“We take the perspective that every purchase, we approach it as if it were our own – just with our client’s criteria and goals in mind,” he explains.

“We don’t feel like we can ever go wrong with a purchase with that attitude at the forefront of our mind.”

This dedication to client service stems from Jack’s belief that “buyers deserve the same level of representation as the seller.”

“For the biggest purchase of your life, a lot of people just wing it when they don’t really know anything and just trust that a real estate agent or a seller has their best interest at the forefront of their mind,” he says.

Growth plans

Buyer Collective has already expanded to the Gold Coast with a local agent servicing that region, and Jack has plans for continued growth.

“The plan is to grow the team, be able to service and help more buyers into the market,” he says. “I love helping buyers buy the right property. It’s really a passion of mine to be able to see people win and do good.”

The agency has also partnered with buyersagents.com.au to support their growth and connect with the broader buyer’s agent community.

As Jack looks to the future, his goal is to expand.

“To grow the team, keep expanding, bring our presence here in Brisbane, make that a bit more well known and a bit bigger, but also do the same down on the coast and scale sensibly.”

With his extensive background in property development and genuine passion for helping buyers make informed decisions, Jack Freestone is well-positioned to continue his success story in the years ahead.
