Gene Hackman’s Santa Fe estate hits market for $6.25 million

The Santa Fe compound where Hollywood legend Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa lived for decades has been listed for sale at $6.25 million (AUD $9.46 million), nearly a year after their deaths.

According to Mansion Global, the 53-acre estate features a 13,000-square-foot main residence with three bedrooms, a three-bedroom guesthouse, and numerous luxury amenities, including a putting green, artist’s studio, lap pool, and hot tub.

Located in the Summit, a gated community northeast of downtown Santa Fe, the property offers exceptional privacy with a second set of gates inside the community.

Hackman and Arakawa purchased the site in the 1990s and built the main residence around 1997, later adding the studio in 1999.

The two-time Oscar winner had been drawn to Santa Fe after working on films in the area.

Unlike many traditional adobe-style homes in the area, the Hackman residence features a more contemporary design with floor-to-ceiling windows, native stone, steel, and glass.

The grand living room showcases exposed timber beams, while the library includes a custom fabric ceiling designed for soundproofing, where Hackman reportedly watched movies.

The tragic circumstances surrounding the property’s listing stem from the deaths of both Hackman and Arakawa last year.

Hackman, who starred in films including “The French Connection” and “Unforgiven”, was found to have died of heart disease, while his wife died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.

The agents acknowledged that the home requires some maintenance, with the estate planning to install a new roof this month.

They are also taking precautions against curiosity seekers by requiring proof of funds checks before showings.

The Santa Fe luxury market has remained steady, with the median home price reaching $675,000 (AUD $1.02 million) in the final quarter of 2025, representing a 4% increase year-over-year, according to Sotheby’s.

Tara S. Earley and Ricky Allen of Sotheby’s International Realty, hold the listing.
