Peter Camphin to lead fresh chapter for REIQ as new Chair

The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) has entered a new era with a significant leadership change as long-serving Chair Peter Brewer concludes his decade of service on the board.

Peter Camphin has been appointed as the new Chair of the REIQ Board, bringing over 45 years of real estate experience to the role.

The announcement was made at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting, where tributes were paid to outgoing Chair Peter Brewer for his transformative contributions.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella praised Brewer’s exceptional leadership during his tenure, particularly highlighting his eight years as Chair.

She emphasised the significant milestones achieved under his guidance.

“Peter brought a unique, progressive, and refreshing approach to the role of Chair, coupled with a fiery passion for our profession that is inextinguishable,” Ms Mercorella said.

Mr Brewer’s legacy includes embedding diversity into the REIQ Constitution, modernising operations through digitisation, navigating the real estate industry through the pandemic, and helping to overturn the multi-jurisdictional land tax.

In his reflections, Mr Brewer expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve REIQ members, describing it as the greatest honour of his professional life.

“Together with a talented Board and executive team, we kept our eyes on two horizons at once: making members’ work easier today and shaping fairer policy for tomorrow,” he said.

The incoming Chair, Peter Camphin, brings extensive experience across property management and sales roles.

His background includes owning multiple real estate businesses, holding governance positions, and serving as the former CEO of Ray White Queensland for nearly 20 years.

Mr Camphin said he was honoured to be leading the REIQ into its next phase and acknowledged the significant contributions of his predecessor.

“Lifting the standards of professionalism has been something very dear to me, along with lifting the recognition and the reputation of the people who work in this profession,” Mr Camphin said.

“Peter Brewer has left an indelible mark and it’ll be here for a long time. We have such a proud history, and I look forward to building on the legacy of those who came before me.โ€

The Annual General Meeting also saw two Director positions filled through membership votes.

Laura Valenti was re-elected as Female Director, continuing her six-year service on the board, while Darren Cole was newly elected as General Member Director.

Mr Cole brings over 23 years of experience in the real estate sector and has been actively engaged with the REIQ as a member of the Residential Sales Chapter Committee and as a representative on AUSTRAC’s Industry Forum.

“With a real estate career spanning more than two decades, including first-hand experience in a variety of roles and segments, I trust I’m well placed to make a positive contribution to the REIQ’s work for our members and broader industry,” Mr Cole said.
