Lane Cove tops Australia’s most liveable neighbourhoods list

Sydney's north shore council area of Lane Cove has been named Australia's most liveable neighbourhood in a comprehensive national study involving more than 27,000 Australians.

The 2025 Australian Liveability Census, conducted by social research company Place Score, evaluated more than 15,000 areas against 50 different markers including natural environment, safety, proximity to amenities, and visual character.

Other top-rated areas included Vincent in Western Australia, Sydney’s inner west, Victoria’s Surf Coast, Hobart, North Sydney, Willoughby, Bayside in Victoria, Camden in Sydney, Joondalup in Western Australia, Ku-ring-gai on Sydney’s upper north shore and the City of Sydney.

The census revealed that high-density areas were generally rated 5 per cent more liveable than low-density ones, challenging common perceptions about urban density.

The study found that when areas like Lane Cove became more dense, they maintained their appeal through proactive council initiatives to provide public spaces.

This created value in higher-density neighbourhoods with nearby amenities, described as “clustered amenity” in the findings.

The research shows that Lane Cove Council has successfully managed development pressures by creating spaces for events, concerts, and outdoor activities.

This has resulted in the area becoming increasingly popular with families.

In Victoria, the Surf Coast ranked as the state’s most liveable area, known for its spectacular coastal scenery and hinterland.

Overall, Australia’s national liveability score dropped to 66 out of 100, a one per cent decline from 2023, returning to pre-pandemic levels observed in 2019.

The findings suggest the COVID period temporarily boosted community connection, which explains the previous higher scores. During this time, people had new opportunities to discover their local neighbourhoods, connect with neighbours, and help each other.

The research provides valuable insights for government planning, particularly regarding housing development.

The findings indicate Australians prioritise neighbourhoods that are green, safe and well maintained, with access to public transport, walking and cycling networks, shops and local amenities.
