Historic New York Times estate hits market at US$75 million

The 268-acre Connecticut property, built for the Sulzberger publishing family in 1900, showcases the scale of America's ultra-luxury estate market.

A sprawling estate built for the family behind The New York Times has been listed for US$75 million (AUD$107 million), making it Connecticut’s most expensive property currently on the market according to The Samford Advocate.

Hillandale, a European-style stone manor at 1233 Rock Rimmon Road in Stamford, spans more than 268 acres across 18 tax lots, straddling the Connecticut–New York border.

The property was constructed in 1900 for the Sulzberger family, the long-time publishers of The New York Times.

It changed hands in 1992 when the Haroche family – founders of Liberty Travel – purchased the estate.

The Haroche family are now selling, having invested more than US$30 million in restorations and upgrades that doubled the size of the manor home, according to Kristina Helb, Vice President of Global Communications for Sotheby’s International Realty.

The main residence stretches across nearly 16,000 square feet with eight bedrooms and 14 bathrooms. Period details include 18th and 19th century sculptures at the entrance, gold-plated faucets, hand-carved English pine panelling from the 18th century, and a skylight believed to be an unsigned Tiffany piece.

The indoor pool wing features an Olympic-sized pool with 18th century Triton water fountains imported from France. Antique marble, limestone, onyx, mosaic tile and stained glass appear throughout, giving the property what McElwreath described as the look of a “bygone era.”

Beyond the main house, the estate includes four guest houses ranging from 1,296 to 5,122 square feet, a garage apartment, two horse barns, a tennis court, greenhouse, and more than five miles of private roads.

The grounds feature a five-acre lake with sandy beach, additional ponds, an outdoor pool with pool house, a large-scale outdoor chess set, and a hedge maze.

The property last hit the market before the COVID pandemic but has not been offered since, according to Helb.

Leslie McElwreath of Sotheby’s International Realty-Greenwich Brokerage has the listing.
