Fashion designer Marc Ecko lists historic New Jersey mansion for $10 million

Fashion designer Marc Ecko has relisted his historic Gilded Age mansion in Bernardsville, New Jersey for just under $10 million (AUD 15.2 million).

The 19th-century stone mansion, known as Stronghold, sits on more than 30 acres about 40 miles southwest of Manhattan.

The castle-like property features a central tower, wrought-iron balconies, and a wraparound porch.

Built in 1886 by architect George B. Post, the approximately 20,000-square-foot residence was originally constructed for James Coleman Drayton and his wife, Charlotte Augusta Astor, daughter of prominent Gilded Age socialites Caroline Schermerhorn Astor and William Backhouse Astor Jr.

The Ecko family has owned the property since 2005, when they purchased it through an LLC for $5.7 million (AUD 8.7 million), according to Mansion Global.ย

Despite the home’s historic exterior, the Eckos completed extensive renovations about a decade ago that transformed the interiors into contemporary living spaces with playful, modern elements.

The renovation maintained the home’s period details while introducing unexpected colours and contemporary art. Ecko, founder of the streetwear brand Ecko Unltd., incorporated his personal art collection featuring works by artists like Shepard Fairey and KAWS, creating an interesting juxtaposition with the home’s historic architectural elements.

The property boasts seven bedrooms and 13 bathrooms, along with numerous distinctive features including stained-glass windows, one crafted by Tiffany, and a solarium guarded by stone rhinoceroses, a nod to the animal featured in Ecko’s brand logo.

Additional amenities include a carriage house that serves as a guest cottage, a detached basketball court with a modern gym on the second level, a pool with lounge area, and a pool house among several outbuildings.

Jill Turpin of Turpin Realtors has the listing.
