We Are Real Estate

Pamela Lee Burge: Your smile is your logo

After more than four decades in real estate, RE/MAX Go for Sold agent Pamela Lee Burge still says sometimes the most memorable sales aren’t the ones that earn you money

On getting into real estate
My cousin worked in a real estate office that managed our property while we were overseas and when we returned with a three-month-old baby, I said what everybody says: “I’ve always thought I’d like to be a real estate agent”. I left her office with a job I wasn’t even sure I wanted and have never regretted a minute.

The happiest moment in my career
There are probably too many to mention. I have loved this career from the early days of working with first home buyers to the current day of running my own office and recruiting and training young people into the industry.

The most memorable moment
A property that was a private sale, owned by a young couple who were in a forced sale situation and were trying to sell their home themselves. In desperation, they rang me saying they did not know what to do, they had nobody through over several weeks.

On my visit I sat with them, they were very worried about fees and really needed every cent. I rewrote their ad and chose new photos and told them to try it for one more week after which I would list it. They sold it that weekend at their open home.

This was a great feeling knowing that I had been able to help them even though I never got paid, but it absolutely reinforced for me the knowledge and skill needed to do this job.

Best advice she’s received
Listings are the most important thing in real estate and not all business is good business. The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.

Biggest challenge
The average age of people in this industry is too old. The biggest challenge is recruiting young people into the industry.

Change for good?
More control over unsupervised salespeople and the restrictions on how many people one agent’s licence can supervise.

‘Elite’ agent means
Your SMILE is your LOGO, your PERSONALITY is your BUSINESS CARD, how you leave others feeling after an experience with you becomes your TRADEMARK.
