LJ Hooker Running for Cystic Fibrosis Australia

On October 21, LJ Hooker Real Estate and Cystic Fibrosis Australia have hundreds of people literally running around raising funds and awareness for this life-threatening genetic disease.

Proceeds will raise research funds to help families affected by the genetic disorder, which limits sufferers’ life expectancy to around 37 years. There is currently no cure in sight.

In Australia one baby every four days is born with cystic fibrosis. The internal organs become clogged with excessive mucus, especially the lungs and digestive system.

Last year when Melbourne nurse Joanne Williams gave birth to her second child, she knew something wasn’t right. “Ben kept screaming and was always hungry and losing weight because he was hard to feed. He just wouldn’t sleep,“ she explained.

It took three weeks before tiny Ben was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and eventually he was given special enzymes to help with digestion. Although his health has improved, he’ll rely on antibiotics and various other treatments for the rest of his life.

In April Joanne and her young family took part in CF’s ‘Angling for a Cure’ event, and they’re currently in full training for ‘Great Strides’.

Ben is now one year old and is quite used to his parents pushing him and big sister Annika in the double stroller around various running tracks.

Joanne says she’s mentally insane because she loves running 10 kilometres once or twice a week and even three times if she’s lucky. “Running for CF causes is always going to be special to me,” she said.
