Independent Property Group to hold a free seminar for first-home buyers wanting to break into the Canberra market

Independent Property Group has announced the launch of a free seminar, sponsored by Westpac Bank, for first-home buyers looking to break into the housing market in Canberra.

The event will feature Will Honey, Principal at Independent Property Group Tuggeranong, Aimee Bergan and Nicole Kerli from Westpac Bank, as keynote speakers on the evening. The expert panel will cover everything concerning finance and legal requirements, and offer tips and tricks on buying.

The market in Canberra is expected to continue to experience upward growth, which makes it particularly difficult for first-home buyers in the region to find suitable housing as a first buy.

The seminar will target a number of key areas, including the changes in the first-home owner’s grant and stamp duty concessions set to roll out on 1 July 2019.

Canberra is a particularly difficult place for first-home buyers, with housing affordability there rated the least available in the nation, according to the 2019 Productivity Commission report.

To break into the housing market, the first-home owner’s grant assists first-time buyers with the costs associated with sourcing an affordable house or apartment.

The ACT Government will instead abolish payment of stamp duty for first-home buyers – which will mean they have to save or borrow the $7,000 which would have normally been covered by the grant.

It’s no secret that agents are concerned in regards to the abolition of the home owner’s grant and the effect it will have on the ability of first-time buyers to enter the property market.

Independent Property Group aims to conduct the seminar to ensure as many people as possible are aware that the grant is still available up to 1 July 2019, after which time it will be abolished.
