When Sam Bevan starts her trek to Mount Everest Base Camp later this month, she won’t just focus on the physical challenge but the mental hurdle.
The Realmark Sales Associate and 2018 Elite Agent Transform winner says last year was a turning point in her life and she hopes the trek will inspire further clarity and direction.
Headed by real estate mindset coach Jet Xavier, Sam will be one of 11 agents to trek 5,380m above sea level to the base camp on the southern side of the world’s highest mountain.
The agents hope to raise $50,000 to aid women and children in Nepal.
The trek will start on 29 April and is expected to take 14 days, including rest, acclimatisation and exploring days.
“Last year I won Elite Agent’s Transform 2018 and this started me on a huge journey of self-discovery and self-adjustment,” Sam says.
“I reassessed everything that was or wasn’t working in my life.
“I met Jet along the way as he was one of the Transform mentors, and he was instrumental in my journey of self-realisation.
“I took a magnifying glass to my personal life and career last year and when this opportunity presented itself I said ‘Why not’?
“This is not only about conquering the mountain, it is about conquering what’s going on inside my head.”
Base Camp for Agents is raising funds to support charity work in Nepal, which is facilitated through the Rotary Club of Milton/Ulladulla and the Seven Women Project.
Money raised will support women and children in Nepal through key projects focused on education and literacy, skills training and income generation.
Raising $250 will send one child to school for a year, including fees, textbooks, stationery, their uniform, school bag and lunch.
Donating $50 fully equips one student with textbooks and stationery to attend literacy class, while $1,750 provides seven scholarships so seven students can attend school for a year.
Sam says she also hopes the trek will show her two children how fortunate they are and how, with the right mindset, they can achieve anything.
“My children are so blessed,” she says.
“They wake up every day and have an education handed to them on a platter.
“My daughter has never had to fight to be educated.
“I want them to know they can do anything, no matter what the odds are stacked against them.”
Sam’s participation in the trek fits perfectly with Realmark’s ethos of empowering team members, especially women.
John and Anita Percudani established Realmark 30 years ago with this in mind.
“It is so encouraging to see the strong women of Realmark taking on a challenge such as this to give back,” Anita says.
“It shows the strength of our team, and Sam is leading by such a great example for women in the industry.”
Rosanna Webb, the licensee-in-charge of sales at Highlands Property in Bowral, will join Sam on the trek.
She says the adventure will allow her to “give back to the world”.
“This is something I struggle with in regards to the real estate industry, as it can appear to be full of ego and false glamour and I really dislike that aspect of it.
“I want to be involved in something bigger than that, which is truly making a difference to people’s lives.”
On an individual level, Rosanna says she hopes the trek will inspire greater personal growth.
She said 2018 was a rough year and she needed to do something for herself, and especially have time to “do a bit of soul searching”.
“Working full-time in real estate, managing a team, trying to maintain my fitness, my social life and single-parenting a four-year-old means I haven’t had much time to just be,” Rosanna says.
“I am hoping trekking to the base camp will help me to gain some clarity on what is important to me so I can focus and go for it.”
Jacq Hackett, of Jacq Hackett Property, will also join the trek and sees it as a chance to give to those less fortunate, despite conquering hardships of her own – including the 2011 Queensland floods, financial and marital issues.
“Raising funds for others less fortunate than myself while experiencing poverty is more important to me than anything else,” Jacq says.
“Giving back creates a ripple effect.
“In the great scheme of universal reciprocity, I know my children and I will witness great blessings.
“So I will sing and dance on Mount Everest – the greatest challenge of them all.”
